Senators confirm Critical Path CEO retired from IBM

Tucsonan Myers is state's newest regent

Tucsonan Rick Myers was confirmed by the state Senate on Wednesday as the newest member of the Arizona Board of Regents.

Myers replaces Fred Boice, also from Tucson, who served eight years. Myers is a retired IBM research and development executive who now serves as chief operating officer of the Critical Path Institute. The institute studies ways to accelerate development of new drugs.

Members of the Senate Education Committee quickly praised Myers on his work ethic, business and leadership experience, and his reputation as a problem solver.

"He's probably better equipped to help move the universities forward than almost any other nominee we've seen," said committee Chairman John Huppenthal, R-Chandler.

Jonathan Paton, R-Tucson, thanked Myers for being willing to take on the responsibility "in one of the most difficult points in state history" for the universities and the state.

"You have your work cut out for you," Paton told Myers.

Linda Lopez, D-Tucson, said she met with Myers to talk about the Latino community's concerns about access and equity at the University of Arizona. Lopez said she was pleased when he said he'd meet with them and hear their concerns.

Myers said he is grateful for the opportunity to be a regent.

"I recognize how important the universities are to the people of Arizona and certainly to the future of our state," he told the committee.

Gov. Jan Brewer still must appoint someone to replace Bob Bulla, who also has served eight years on the board.
