The University of Arizona is one of the best-known research institutions in the world. The College of Optical Sciences graduates more optics students than any university in the nation and is in a high growth mode. A top 5-ranked Management Information Systems department, along with areas of specialization in environmental technology and bioindustry, makes research available through technology transfer arrangements and entrepreneurial efforts. The University of Arizona is among the national leaders in cancer research, cardiopulmonary research and treatment, and pharmacology. The mission of the University of Arizona Office of Technology Transfer is to assist the faculty in matters related to intellectual property, including interactions with commercial partners, and to bring the inventions and discoveries developed within the University to market for the public good. It works closely with the high-tech clusters in Southern Arizona on a broad range of tech transfer matters.

University of Arizona Science and Technology Park

Named as the Association of University Research Park's Outstanding Research Park of 2001, the University of Arizona Science and Technology Park is one of the nation's foremost research and development facilities. It is a unique environment designed to foster technology development from the laboratory to the marketplace.

The facility is a master-planned development located on 1,345 acres in Tucson's southeast metropolitan area. It consists of nearly 2 million square feet of highly improved space currently occupying 345 acres. Plans for expansion over the next five years include the addition of 4 million square feet of space.

Supported and managed by the University of Arizona, the facility creates links between the university and high-tech industries by partnering with nationally-known companies in the fields of aerospace, optics, bioindustry, information technology and environmental technology. Park companies benefit from productive relationships with the University of Arizona, a Research One University, as well as from a host of business and tax benefits. Among the 30 companies currently located within the park are Raytheon, IBM and Convergys.

Located at the University of Arizona Science & Technology Park, the Arizona Center for Innovation promotes the development of high-tech companies in Southern Arizona through a disciplined program of business development with an emphasis on University of Arizona patented and licensed technology. Admission standards focus on research and development start-up companies with technology in one of the following fields: advanced materials and composites; aerospace; environmental technologies; information technology; life sciences; and optics/photonics.
